Wynetta Ashley

July 10, 1925 — February 7, 2011

Wynetta Ashely was born July 10, 1925 in Hillsboro, Alabama to Bluit Phill Stewart and Ada Bell White. Wynetta was one of 6 children born to this union. Wynetta attended Davis Temple Elementary School in Hillsboro, Alabama until 1935 when her family relocated to Cleveland, Ohio and her education was continued at Gladstone Elementary. She later graduated from John Hay High School and received an Associate's Degree from Cleveland State University. Wynetta joined and accepted Christ at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. In 1949 she met and married her husband of 56 years, Charles Ashley and together they joined East Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Wynetta was a member of the Woman's Auxiliary. To this union two children were born, Lavelle in 1950 and Corlanders the next year in 1951. Wynetta was her husband's right hand in business ventures; starting with Chuck's Hat Shop and Dry Cleaning Services they operated two locations from 1952 to 1959. They added Corvall's Pool Halls 1 and 2 to their list of businesses; which were named after the couple's two sons. Mr. Ashley was reluctant to sell footlongs to the fisherman but Wynetta was determined and took the bull by the horns and did it herself. That success was the catalyst for them to open "Shrimp Boat" on E. 55th and Central Avenue. Wynetta had no fear, the words "Can't Do" did not exist in her vocabulary. She had a great sense of humor and strong sense of doing the right thing no matter what the consequences were. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, Corlanders, two brothers, Bluitt Phill Stewart Jr., and Emmett Stewart; two sisters, Anna Belle Stewart-Davis and Margerine Stewart . Left to cherish Wynetta's memory are; her son, Lavalle Ashley (Luisa) ; two sisters, Geneva Stewart, and Frances O'Neil Stewart; a grandson, Michael Brandon Ashley; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other family and dear friends. HOMEGOING SERVICES SATURDAY, FEB. 26; WAKE 9:30 AM, FUNERAL 10:00 AM at East Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 9990 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio. Interment in Riverside Cemetery.
