Dr. Sheltreese Danyell McCoy, 37; passed away Thursday, November 22nd; Funeral Services will begin 12:30 PM Saturday, December 8th at New Life at Calvary Church 2020 East 79th Street Cleveland, Ohio 44103. Dr. Sheltreese Donyell McCoy of Oakland, CA affectionately known as "Treese" was born on February 16, 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to her proud parents, Shelly Barksdale (father) and Theresa McCoy (mother). While being raised in Cleveland, Ohio at the tender age of 8, she had BIG DREAMS of making a difference in her life and the others that surrounded her! In her own words "I believe I can change the world." She loved travelling, cooking, arts and crafts, playing card games with her mom and spreading her love with her dad, brothers, niece and nephew. She was a Cheerleader at Health Center High school in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduation, she attended Bowling Green State University (Bowling Green, Ohio) where she earned a B.A. Degree and majored in Ethnic Studies and Sociology. Dr. McCoy expanded her studies to the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and received a Master of Science Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. After the success of her Master Degree, she did not stop there. Treese was determined and so happy to share with family and friends that she will pursue her Doctorate Degree. In May 2018, this goal was achieved at the University of Wisconsin (Madison) as Treese became Dr. Sheltreese McCoy, PhD majoring in Philosophy. During her time in Wisconsin, she held many influential positions to advocate for change in society. Dr. McCoy served as the Multicultural Issues Director at the United Council of UW Students, Social Justice Educator and Crossroads Initiative Coordinator. She was also involved with the Communist League USA and a fierce advocate for justice for many such as disability rights, intersectionality, queer folks and people of color. She also co-founded, and artist collective known as Creative Minds. In 2017, she won the Consortium Award for Outstanding Social Justice Practice from the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals. An award she held near and dear to her heart. Dr. McCoy's tenaciousness and passion propelled her to create a Social Development Firm - RHedI, LLC (Radical Higher Education Innovations, LLC) where she was the President/Founder of this fine organization. A writer, trainer and teacher facilitating workshops all over the United States, South America and Canada afforded her the opportunity to participate in many activities. This gave her a platform to speak on making a change for our communities. She believed no matter who you are and where you came from - YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! The list of her accomplishments is lengthy, but her legacy will continue on at the University of Wisconsin, in Ohio, California and throughout the United States. Her self- proclaimed trademarks were her beauty. Her compassion, infectious smile and kind heart to everyone she met will always be God's Gift to her family and friends. Dr. Shetreese Donyell McCoy leaves to cherish her memories with her mother, Theresa McCoy; father, Shelly Barksdale (Leslie); brothers, Antone McCoy, Angelo McCoy and Eric Barksdale; niece, Zoey McCoy; nephew, Angelo McCoy, Jr. along with a host of family and dear friends. From the words of Sheltreese's late grandmother "Ma" - Never say goodbye. "Life is a gift from God. Although our Sheltreese may be absent in the body, she is still with in our hearts! Some days may be full of hardship and sadness, each breath, heartbeat and thought illustrates the beautiful gift of life we had with her. Keep the positive memories alive and thank God for the blessings in your past you had with our precious Sheltreese. She is gone, but never forgotten." --- submitted by the Family of Sheltreese McCoy "For prayer is hope put to the test. And hope is faith in what is best. Faith is power to do great things. Thus, prayer is faith's enabling wings." --- Richelle E. Goodrich "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9 We will see you again - our Angel In Loving Memory of Sheltreese Donyell McCoy, PhD
