Sam Sam'i Ali was born in Thomaston, Alabama to the late Oliver Jones, Sr. and Leola Hatcher Jones on May 14, 1933. Sam graduated from Marengo County Training School and served five years in the United States Army. He attended the Erma Lee Barber College and received his apprentice and Master Barber License from the State of Ohio. Sam met Annie Alberta Mosley in 1957 and was married in 1958. From this union, they were blessed with five children. They migrated to Cleveland, Ohio in 1958 and relocated to East Cleveland in 1967. Sam joined the Nation of Islam, Temple No. 18 in 1961 on Superior Avenue across the street from Shabazz Barber Shop. In 1975 Sam left the Nation of Islam and accepted Islam under the Leadership of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed and made the Pilgrimage to Mecca in October 1980. He legally changed his name from Sam Jones to Sam Sam'i Ali. Sam became a barber in 1961 and moved to Shabazz Barber Shop in 1966 until 2003 on 12409 Superior Avenue, which is now demolished. Sam was a member of Masjid Bilal of Cleveland and often visited the sick and cut their hair. He supported the Annual Testimonial Dinner for many years. He enjoyed watching sports and loved to talk about food and his appetite. Annie Alberta Ali (wife), Tamar Ali (son), Abraham Jones (brother), and Oliver Jones, Jr. (brother) preceded him in death. Sam leaves to cherish fond memories, Three daughters, Mrs. Theodora Najieb (husband, Albert), Ms. Tani Ali, Ms. Tahirah Ali, One son Mr. S. Latif Ibn Ali I, (wife Stephanie), Granddaughters, Ms. Rasheedah Najieb, Miss Sydnee Ali, Ms. Leigha Covington, Grandsons, Mr. Khalil Ali (wife Shanita, son Master Trevon Threadgill), Mr. Faheem Najieb and Master Sam Latif Ibn Ali II. Sister Alma Randolph (husband, Willie), Sister Martha Richards, Brother Edward Jones, Sr. (wife Lillian), Brother Vasco Jones (wife, Ethel) and a host of relatives and friends.
