Ruth Earl Bryant

August 2, 1929 — April 21, 2020

Ruth Earl Bishop Bryant, age 90, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, April 21, 2020. She was born on August 2, 1929, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Arthur Dock Bishop and Delia Mae Chandler Bishop. In the late 1940s, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio as part of the great migration of African-Americans moving to the North for a better life. While working at City Hospital, she met William Henry Bryant, who had also migrated to Cleveland from Arkansas. They were married on April 8, 1950. In 2014 her husband, William, preceded her in death after a marriage of over 63 years. After her marriage and the birth of her three children, Ruth worked for 18 years at St. Luke's Hospital as a nurse's aide. In addition to raising her family, she also cared for her brother Arthur Dock Bishop, for over 40 years until his death, after he was disabled in a steel mill accident. She loved to sing and spent many years in the Gospel Choir at Parkwood Methodist Church. She and husband William, a self-taught pianist, shared and passed on their love of music to their children. Their musical talent lives on in daughter, Deborah, and Deborah's son and grandsons. In her later years, Ruth became a member of Starlight Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and all three of her brothers, John, Arthur, and Daniel, as well as a sister, Queen Esther, who died in infancy. She is survived by her daughters Deborah Parker (Calvin), Rebecca Williams (Charles), and her son William H. Bryant, Jr. (Myra); her grandsons Will Buchanan (Tasha) and Kyle Bryant; and two great-grandsons. She will be commemorated in a graveside service on Saturday, April 25 at Knollwood Cemetery where she will be interred next to her husband William H. Bryant, Sr. and near her brother Arthur Bishop. Due to the precautions required by COVID-19, only the immediate family will be in attendance. The family would like to especially acknowledge and thank the staff at The Gardens of McGregor and McGregor at Overlook, for the kind and loving care they provided to Ruth as well as to her husband William. Their selfless care and dedication to easing life for the elderly will never be forgotten.
