Robert Leon Nicholson, Jr.

June 19, 1924 — November 14, 2018

Robert Leon Nicholson Jr. "Jun" was born on June 19, 1924 to the union of Robert Nicholson and Westley Haskin Lawrence in Mt. Pleasant Tennessee. Upon moving to Cleveland, Ohio he was educated through the Cleveland public school system and was a proud graduate of Central High School. On June 18, 1943 he was drafted into the United States Army where he served as a truck driver. He was stationed in France, Germany and other European countries. His unit, the Red Ball Express, received four battle stars. He also received an honorable discharge in January of 1946. He met and married Lola Mae Gradford in 1951 and to that union were born five children: Robert, Deborah, Janet, Leon, and Annette. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life; photography was one of his many passions. Visiting the amusement park at Euclid Beach, Sunday car rides with his family and watching the planes take off and land at the airport brought him much happiness. His commitment to his family was demonstrated throughout his entire life. He was a dedicated employee of the United States Postal Service, where he worked from 1946 until his retirement on May 4, 1986. He was also a man of great devotion. Robert faithfully attended Everlasting Baptist Church. Singing was Robert's most treasured asset. He would often sing around the house, especially while doing the dishes. The residents and staff of Forest Hills Place Assisted Living enjoyed the sounds of his singing throughout the halls. Everyone that came into contact with Robert was affected by his warm smile and overflowing kindness. Robert was a man of great strength, humility and compassion. On November 14, 2018, he peacefully made his transition. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Westley; and brothers James, Westley and Lawrence. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving children Robert (Edna), Deborah (Marc), Janet (Hugh), Leon (Mariam), Annette (Jeffrey); 18 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
