Porter Bell (Barkley) Berry

July 20, 1933 — January 2, 2024

Porter Bell Berry was born July 20th 1933, in Jackson, Georgia to the union of Florence and Edmise Barkley. Porter Bell received Christ at an early age and continued her faith at Bethany Baptist Church after relocating to Cleveland. Her commitment to her faith was evident through her selflessness and willingness to care for others without ever asking for anything in return.

Porter Bell was known for her funny and loving nature, and lived a life dedicated to her family. Porter Bell married the love of her life Lloyd Berry (whom she affectionately called "Hosey") at 16. This would remain her lifelong partner until his passing. In this union they would welcome five children whom she loved dearly. Even though she only birthed five children, everyone knew her as "Mama Berry" or "Grandma". When looking for an example of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, community mom, and friend, she was it!

Porter Bell was an excellent cook and could often be found preparing delicious meals in the kitchen. Every morning without fail, her family would be awakened by the smell of grits, sausages, eggs and bacon and as sure as noon would come, she would have dinner already cooking. Beyond her incredible cooking skills. She found joy in spending time with her family, especially taking care of her grandchildren. Her home, bought with her husband in 1980, was a safe haven. Whether announced or unannounced, everyone that came to her home would be welcomed. You would be sure to have a place to stay and a hearty plate to eat.

Professionally, Porter Bell was a dedicated employee of the Cleveland Board of Education, where she made a lasting impact as the housekeeping Supervisor before her well-deserved retirement. Her work ethic and leadership were admired by all who had the privilege of working alongside her.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her cherished husband Lloyd, her sons, Charles and Randy Berry; granddaughter, Charlee Berry; ten siblings, Marvalene, Lillie Mae, Annie Mag, Walter, Pearse, Thomas (TC), Preacher, Bill, Charlie Frank, and Aaron. Porter Bell's memory is lovingly honored by her children Larry, Diane (Larry), and Carlos. Her sister Laura, and an extraordinary lineage comprising 20 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and 32 great-great-grandchildren as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Porter Bell Berry, a beacon of love and selflessness, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on January 2nd, 2024, in Cleveland, Ohio. A woman of remarkable character, she will be remembered as a loving and selfless mother and grandmother, with a sense of humor that could light up any room. Her departure leaves a void that can never be filled, but her influence will continue to be felt by all who had the honor of knowing her. Her life was a beautiful example of kindness, and her memory will be cherished forever by her family, friends, and community.
