Olelia Vernon

September 7, 1916 — April 1, 2011

Services Thursday, April 7, 2011 - 10:30 A.M. at Victory Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church 7501 Sherman Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44104 Olelia Vernon was born September 7, 1916 in Miller's Ferry, Alabama. She was the eldest child born to the late Georgia Ann Johnson and Eddie Williams. She departed this life on April 1, 2011. Olelia was united in marriage to Elev Vernon in 1944 and moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Olelia accepted Christ and was baptized at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Miller's Ferry, Alabama under the leadership of Pastor Harris. She was a faithful member and an exceptional usher. Olelia became a member of Gethsemane Baptist church under the leadership of WR Jones and Stephen D. Sullivan. As a member of the Topaz Club, Olelia ministered to many people through home visits to the sick and shut in, and she prepared meals for them. Olelia loved to cook, travel and work in her garden. The phrase "Action Speaks Louder than Words" is the perfect description of Olelia. Olelia will be remembered for her spirit of hospitality; her big heart and open hands always swung the door open to anyone who was in need. Olelia's house became home to many people who were in pursuit of a better life. Her desire to help others, and her commitment to minister to anyone regardless of their need, is a legacy that will live on forever. Olelia leaves to honor her memory, one daughter, Betty J. Jefferson; one grandson, James A. Jefferson Jr. (JoAnn); three sisters, Sarah Johnson (Cleveland, OH), Centa Brewer (Selma, AL) and Hattie Ruth (Camden, AL); and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
