Matilda P. Hamiter

October 28, 1910 — May 5, 2011

MATILDA P. HAMITER, 100 YEARS OLD; Mrs. Matilda P. Hamiter suffered a stroke and departed this life on Thursday, May 5, 2011 in the Vitas Quality Hospice Care, Winter Garden, Florida. Matilda was born on October 28, 1910 in Byromville, Georgia (Dooly County). She was the second child to the late Addie Hill Parker, one brother Eddie Fisher (deceased). She was raised and educated by her grandmother; the late Mary Hill who was a schoolteacher, while her mother Addie finished her college education at Atlanta College. Matilda was going to school with her grandmother before she was of age. Matilda joined her mother and brother in Detroit at the age of ten to further her education. Addie moved her family to Cleveland, Ohio where Matilda remained until she was ninety-four years old. She was married for fifty years to Cleveland Hamiter until his death in February 2001, they did not have children. Matilda owned and operated a restaurant for about five years. She gave up the restaurant business and got a job with Terex (Terex merged with General Motors) cleaning offices and later moved up to the multi-graph machine; printing labels for boxes & bags. Matilda worked for General Motors for twenty two years and retired at the age of sixty-two. She had been retired longer than she worked for General Motors. In September 2005 she moved to Orlando, Florida to live with her cousin and caregiver Clara M Adams. Matilda enjoyed sewing, making jewelry, traveling and being around people. She really enjoyed traveling, if someone said let's go across the street, she was ready. Spending time with God and living a clean godly life, no smoking, drinking or running around in the streets, was Matilda's key to a long fruitful life. Matilda accepted Christ at an early age in Georgia. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church for over sixty years; on the usher board and served the Loaves & Fishes with the Mattie Davis Mission Circle. She leaves to celebrate her passing her loving cousins, Clara M. Adams, Joseph Hill (who she considered to be her children) and other cousins. Special friends, Bernice Brown, Viola Le Grande and a host of other friends she made over her one hundred years on this earth; her church members at Antioch Baptist Church, Cleveland, OH and Central Parkway Baptist Church, Orlando, FL. SERVICE ON THURSDAT, MAY 12, WAKE: 12:30 PM AND FUNERAL SVC 1:00 PM AT ANTIOCH BAPTIST CHURCH, 8869 CEDAR AVENUE. INTERMENT IN HIGHLAND PARK CEMETERY.
