Mary Frances Davis was born on January 25, 1942, to the late Jesse Sr. and Zara E. Kidd of Columbus, Mississippi. She was the eldest of six children from this union. Known for her impeccable taste in fashion, her unwavering dedication to educating underprivileged children, and her relentless pursuit of higher learning, she was unstoppable-a force to be reckoned with.
In 1993, Mary took a chance on love again. Silas C. Davis, who preceded Mary in death became her chosen partner in exploring the world. They were always going somewhere to bask in God's wonderfully created portrait of life. Whether it be a weekend getaway, cruise or just a sneak family check in, these two were inseparable until he succumbed to illness and was called home. She remained devotedly by his side.
Mary's educational journey began around 1971 at the Cleveland State University. She not only achieved her master's degree in urban studies, but continued along and gained her Doctorate degree from Canterbury University in 2002. With these tools in hand, she secured employment in various roles, starting as a clerical assistant, nursing assistant, and bookkeeper, and eventually working in management positions. She became a well-respected supervising social worker for the Cleveland Department of Human Services for many years. Around 2001, she made a career change that led her to become a teacher in the East Cleveland school district, where she served until she fell ill in 2021.
She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and ETA PHI BETA Sorority Inc. (an educational and charitable organization).
Mary enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved reading, line dancing, attending church, shopping, and more. To know Mary was to love her! She was always kind, always smiling, and her smile could light up any room.
Mary transitioned from this life on August 20, 2024, after a courageous battle, gaining her wings into heaven. She leaves behind cherished memories with her loving brother Tommie and sister Lillie Kidd. In heaven, she has reunited with her brother Jesse Jr. and her sisters Susie and Sally, all now soaring with the angels. She will forever be remembered by her sisters in love, Rebecca Duncan and Rethel Green along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous remaining family members and friends. Godchildren Michele and Michael Croom will forever miss their beloved "Nina," as she was affectionately called. Michele tirelessly showered "Nina" with flowers, shared special memories and laughs, and was devoted to providing her with unwavering love.
