Louis S. Sams

September 15, 1927 — December 7, 2020

Louis S. Sams, was born September 15, 1927 in Sapelo Island, Georgia to Stephen and Mattie Mae Sams. The family relocated to Allenhurst Georgia where he was educated in the school system of Liberty County. He was the only male child of six children born to this union. Louis attended Savannah State University where he received certification in brick mason, the craft he loved.

On March 5, 1948 Louis was united in holy matrimony to his high school sweetheart, Mary M. Hendry. To this union eight children were born. Judy, Ray, Linda, Marvin, Donald, Darryl, Leona, and Debra. They were married for 68 years before his love transitioned on August 28, 2016.

Louis served in the United States Army and fought in the Korean War. After his discharge from the military, he relocated north to Cleveland Ohio in 1952, where he continued his craftmanship as a brick mason. Because of his passion for the craft, Louis was willing to teach and train those who had shown a desire. He left a legacy of his craft with his four sons and grandsons.

Louis was a God-fearing man and confessed Christ early in life. His faith in the Lord was an example for those to witness wherever and whomever he met. He believed your word was your bond and there was no deviation. In 1961, Louis became a member of Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church under the pastorage of Pastor Payton and now Rev. Dr., E.T. Caviness. He served on the Progressive League until his health would not permit.

Louis made his transition on December 7, 2020 with his daughters Debra and Linda by his side.

Louis was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents, Stephen, and Mattie Mae Sams; his sisters Ethel Anderson, Alice Mack, Lillie Mae Rivers and Gwendolyn Brown.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted and loving children Judy Scroggins, Ray (Barbara), Linda Sams-Watson, Marvin (Toni), Donald, Darryl, Leona Blackmon, and Debra (Glenn) Huguley; his loving sister Maria Lamar; a special nephew he raised as a son Theron (Shirley); 23 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren and a host of other nieces, nephews, and friends.
