John Henry Tompkins Sr. born July 31, 1934 in Jacksonville Florida to Ransom Polk Tompkins Sr. & Henrietta Martin having 6 other siblings Mary (Robert) Jolly, Ruth (Newman) Walker, Willie (Raymond) Toombs, Doris (George) Baker, Ransom Polk Tompkins Jr. (Jewel), Charles Leroy Tompkins. Ransom Polk Tompkins Jr is the only surviving sibling.
John graduated from (Stanton High School) in 1952 in Jacksonville Fl. and moved to Cleveland in 1952 where he worked for the Cleveland Electric Illumination Company as a Mail Clerk. (1952-1953).
John entered the U.S Marine Corp. in August 1953 as a Private and later deployed to Korean. He served his country honorably in the Korean War until April 1956 receiving the following Military honors as Awards United Nation Services Medal, Korean Service Medal and Good Conduct Service Medal.
After military service John and his brother Ransom moved to Cleveland, Ohio. John married Mildred (Bolton) in March 1959; they were married for over 40 years until his wife death in April 2000.
John was an entrepreneur as Founder and Owner of Tompkins Insurance Agency 131st and Harvard Area in the Cleveland Mt Pleasant Area. And he was a civil servant employee for the Cleveland Main Downtown US Postal Services working in the Law Enforcement Unit and retired as a US Marshall Service Officer.
John has been affiliated with various organization, U.S Postal Union Post, American Legions, Tuskegee Red Tails and Lifetime member of the USMC and has given to numerous charities. Also, he was a long faithful member of The Community Baptist Church (Cleveland, Ohio) where he served as an usher.
In 2009, Elizabeth Smith and John Tompkins crossed path in 2009 after a fifty-years friendship separation and united in marriage in July18, 2009 until her death October 2017.
John is survived by his two daughters’ Lucy Bowens and Wanda (Brutus) Sutton and two son’s Ronald (Ronnie) Huggins Sr. (Tanya) and John Tompkins Jr. 19 grandchildren and over 56 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great, grandchildren.
