John Oliver Gunn, Jr. was called to his Eternal Home on April 8, 2022, at the age of 82. Born January 29, 1940, he was the son of Magnolia (Hill) Gunn-Murray and John Oliver Gunn, Sr.
Gunn was a graduate of New Castle Senior High School where he excelled as an outstanding running back for the NE-CA-HI Red Hurricanes and as a member of the schools' wrestling team. Gunn also excelled as a Little League baseball player.
As a youth Gunn was an active member of St John United Holy Church where he participated in many activities and sang in the Community Choir under the direction of Elanor Garside. Gunn graduated from New Castle High in 1958 and enrolled at Central State (Ohio) University where he continued his football career. At Central State he joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Inc. and participated in ROTC, graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant.
John was a teacher in the Cleveland Ohio school system and pursued graduate studies at Bowling Green University. Gunn served his country in the Vietnam War and was later honorably discharged at the rank of Captain. Leaving the field of public education, Gunn's life-long career dream was the practice of law, so he enrolled at John Marshall School of Law, Cleveland and earned the Juris Doctorate degree. He retired from the practice of law in 1986.
He enjoyed many things including watching the news, sports and listening to music while snacking on chocolate and whiskey. But most importantly spending time with family and friends. Gunn loved to attend family functions where he was able to connect, reminisce and share love and laughter.
Gunn is survived by his brother Arthur, his children Jon Sr., Terri, Summer, and Marissa. His grandchildren Porscha, Janeese, Myron, Jon Jr., Christopher, Ariel, Tyzha, Oliver and Levi. 9 great grandchildren and a host of cousins whom he loved dearly.
John was preceded in death by his parents Magnolia and John Sr., grandparents Arthur and Viola Hill and John and Nellie Gunn, and oldest daughter Myra Lynne.
