She was born October 15, 1924 to the union of the late Elmo and Lenora Johnson-Nelson in Barnesville, Georgia. She was the oldest of two children, her younger brother Delton Nelson, preceded her in death. On December 23, 1942 Jewell married Thomas Aldine Maines (deceased). She was the mother of six children, Barbara Dean, Charlene Maines, Rougukria Roddy, Melvin Maines (deceased), Thomas (Merrill) Maines and Mylan Maines. Jewell accepted Christ at the age of 12 years old in Barnesville, Georgia. She joined East Mt. Zion Baptist Church shortly after relocating to Cleveland, Ohio in 1951. Jewell was a stay at home mom and grandmother. She enjoyed and loved her family and extended family. She worked different jobs and in 1984, Jewell and her daughter Charlene Maines acquired Maines Varity Shop; Charlene later retired there for her mother. Jewell enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. Jewell leaves to cherish her memories her children, one daughter-in-law, Anila Maines; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. These are the people who loved and affectionately cared for Jewell, Donald Harris, Venita Milcalf, Kurt Kennedy, Ingrid Freeman, Natasha Campbell, George Washington, Darlene Map and Charlene, Khalif, Zimberlist Lewis (Lorenzo), Kim Cooper, Thelma Young and too many more to mention. We are especially grateful to our East Mt. Zion Baptist Church family. Pastor A. Charles Bowie, Life Line Ministry, the deacons and deaconesses and the Dorcus Missionary Circle.
