JAMES EDWARD "DUKE" ELLINGTON, 70; Passed April 6, 2015. James Edward Ellington was born on January 13, 1945 to Elizabeth and Edward Leach, in Shelby, N.C. Both parents and one sibling preceded him in death. In 1950, James and two older siblings were adopted by Willie H. Ellington, their step-father. James was affectionately known as "Duke" by family and friends. He attended John Adams High School in Cleveland, Ohio graduating with honors. He proudly served in the United States Army from July 1965 until 1968, receiving an honorable discharge. James and Jeanette Reed were married in 1967; no children were born to this union. After leaving the military, James returned to his former employer, The Ohio Bell Telephone Company. His professional career of friendship, loyalties, and service lasted for 32 years. In 1951, James accepted Christ as his personal savior when he joined Mt. Herman Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. R.L. Fuller. During his young years, he served in the Junior Choir and later the Revelations and Sanctuary Choirs. James was known for his quick-wit, love of music, traveling, bowling, family gatherings, and tremendous enjoyment from gardening. He has such a flair and style for fashion he could have given G.Q. some tips. On April 6, 2015, James departed this life at his home. Those left to cherish fond and loving memories are: a devoted sister, Geraldine (Sonny) Howard; niece, Deborah Johnson; nephew, Thomas (Velvet) Ellington; aunt, Clara Thomas; great-nieces, A'Jos-Lyn and Angela; nephew, Little Tommy; as well as other family and friends.
