Horace Asa Lewis

July 4, 1942 — November 23, 2022

Horace Asa Lewis affectionately known as Jackie, was born July 4th, 1942, in Tuscaloosa Alabama to Willie V and Leroy Lewis who preceded him in death. After a brief stay at the Pleasant Lake Villa, he gracefully left us on November 23rd, 2022.

He is the third of seven children Barbara, Leroy, Wilma aka Carolyn, Hakeem, Timothy, and Lisa.

Horace was raised in Cleveland Ohio and as kids Horace, would get his brothers together and pool their money together as paper boys to save for Christmas gifts. Horace was always looking for a way to work hard and save money for an end goal.

The hard work was translated to in his educational journey from which he graduated from Glenville High School in 1960, continued into college receiving an associate degree from Cuyahoga Community College and later Cleveland State majoring in engineering.

In 1964 Horace met his wife Anita and was married on July 18th, 1964. From this union that year they had their first of three sons Horace. His second son Patrick was born less than a year later. And the third son Christopher was born 5 years after Patrick.

One of his first jobs was at Halle's department store where he excelled. Horace started working at General Motors in April of 1963. At General Motors which he nicknamed "Generous Motors" because of all the benefits that the union provided its employees. He began his career at General Motors as an assembly line worker to becoming an electrician apprentice, to journeyman, to an electrician. With the continuing advancement of technology in General Motors, Horace became one of the first African Americans working in a robotic section of General Motors. Horace also was very active and believed in the principles of the Union, Fair Labor Laws and what the Union provides for the everyday employee. Horace retired from General Motors in June of 2006 after 43 years of service.

Horace was a hard worker and insured that his family was always provided with the best. At times Horace would take a second job to ensure that this would occur. He would take them to football games at the dawg pound, basketball games at Richfield Coliseum, concerts in any venue and annual summer vacations. Horace was the quintessential provider for his family!

Just as much as Horace believed in having a good time, he also believed that education was a key to African Americans success in America. He was willing to send his kids to the best schools, and if it meant that he had to work two jobs to do it, he would. He spared no expense to ensure that his children had an opportunity to be whatever they chose to be by making sacrifices so that they had the best quality education.

Horace also made sure that the extended family was included in multiple family activities going to Cedar Point, SeaWorld, Geauga Lake and on vacations. Horace always wanted family around and not just his immediate family. Kids were always over, spending the night and always had a good time.

Horace also found time to have fun with his work buddies. From playing Pinochle, Poker, bid whist and going on vacations with his friends, Horace always found a way to have fun!

Horace is survived by his three sons Horace Asa Lewis II, (daughter in-law Keisha, who he loved and cherished as if she was his own daughter), Patrick Robert Lewis and Christopher Andre Lewis, eight grandchildren, Eboni Monet Lewis, Asa Brandon Lewis, Jeremiah Nicoli Lewis, Xavier Abshire, Jonah Elijah Lewis, Evan Lewis, Kason Micah Lewis, and Cata'Leya Whitmore. He is also survived by his four remaining siblings Lisa Lewis-Moss, Timothy Lewis, Hakeem Lewis, Barbara Lewis, Leroy Lewis (who preceded him in death),Wilma(Carolyn) McIntosh (who preceded him in death) and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
