Gladys Hill

GLADYS HUBBARD HILL, age 88, was born in Cleveland, Ohio to the union of Willie Hubbard and Annie Bell Wallace, both of Rome, Georgia. Gladys had an elder sister, Mattie Louise Hubbard Lunkins and a younger sister Lola Mae Hubbard Early, who both preceded her in death. Gladys also had three half siblings: Vivian Hubbard Gomez, Loretta and Harry Hubbard and Willie Lee Webb who also preceded her in death. Gladys was affectionately called: "Goggie" by Sister Lola, "Gram Gladys" by Angel, "Baby Gladys" by Jewell and "Mary Jane" a self-appointed middle name, because none was given her by her parents. Gladys and her sisters were raised in the foster home of Adella Sims. Gladys attended Cleveland Public Schools and finished her education at John Adams High School. Gladys love to skate, crochet, dance, play the harmonica, sing and jump Double-Dutch rope, play Ball and Jax, and travel. Gladys loved children; she led Girl Scout troops #172 and #805. Gladys was employed by R. B. Dennison Manufacturing Company for 22 years, prior to retirement. Many years earlier, Gladys worked in the homes of the Allegas, the Glicks, and the Coles families; to name a few. Gladys married Allen Von Hill; to this union Jewell L. Hill was born. Later Gladys united with Sammie Wright; to this union Chere' S. Wright was born. Prior to her illness and the death of her betrothed, she was to marry Jethro L. Dawkins. In 1978 Gladys was initiated into Morning Star Chapter No. 4, Order of Eastern Star, she later advanced to the Heroine of Jericho, The Crusaders, the Amaranth, where she served as the Royal Matron for 4 years; the Grand Royal Associate Matron and finally the Daughters of Isis Masonic Orders. Gladys also served as the Supervisor for the Masonic Blue Cross Nurses. At a young age Gladys was baptized and attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church. In 1957 Gladys joined Second Metropolitan Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. B. T. Birmingham. Gladys served in the Nurses Guild many decades. Gladys showered relatives and friends with all varieties of her crocheted footies, afghans, shawls, hats and scarves; if you knew her you have something she crocheted. After her illness, Gladys was cared for at Wickliffe Country Place, in Wickliffe Ohio, were she acquired many new friends and caregivers. Gladys leaves to cherish her memories, two daughters: Jewell L. Stewart (Ronald) and Chere' "Shariah" S. Roberson (Moses "Mosheh"); three grandchildren: Neichelle T. Thompson, Caton Alexander and Tamika Ried; 12 great grand-children, a host of relatives and friends. Gladys also leaves two childhood friends from elementary school days, Marie Mischal and Ethel Wallace, who will cherish memories of a friendship that spans more than 8 decades. Public Viewing WEDNESDAY, JULY 9th from 2PM - 7PM. FUNERAL SERVICES start at 12:30PM on Thursday, July 10th at Watson's Funeral Home, 10913 Superior Ave. Interment in Evergreen Memorial Park.
