George C. Fleming

George Clarence Fleming, 98, father of Rosalind Clark (Henry) & Jocelyn Alexander (James); passed away Sun. Feb. 4th; Funeral begins 12:30 PM Mon. Feb. 12th at Watson's Funeral Home 10913 Superior Ave. Cle. 44106 George Clarence Fleming was proud to claim Virginia as his home state. He was born in Petersburg on October 11, 1919. He was the only son of George Clarence Fleming, Sr. and Ruth Powell Fleming. Both of his parents passed away while George was still school-age. George felt that education and learning were key to success and stability in life. He was a proud graduate of Hampton Institute - twice. In 1940 he received a diploma in Automobile Mechanics. In 1949, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton. Grandsons, Henry III and George, Sr. learned a good amount of history, first-hand, by listening to their granddaddy share his experiences as a World War II veteran. George served in the Second Army in Europe as a truck driver. He achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps in 1950. He also served for seven years in the Officers' Reserve Corps. George came to Youngstown, Ohio and met Helen Caraway from Monroe, Louisiana. They were married on December 27th, 1947. In 1959 when their daughters, Rosalind and Jocelyn, were ages 10 and 5, George moved the family to Cleveland in order to continue his job as a postal employee at the Cleveland Postal Annex. During his 31 years as a postal clerk, George received recognition for "notable performance" and for exceptional accumulation of sick leave - indications of his excellent work ethic, and dedication to providing a good life for his wife and daughters. This dedication carried over to his marriage. He and Helen were married for nearly 40 years until her sudden passing in September 1987. George was devoted to his grandsons, Henry and George. His humorous stories recounting days gone by and his hilarious one-liners made them giggle and laugh from the time they were little boys to their days as adult men. They loved granddaddy and did all they could to help him to be happy, comfortable, and safe. George enjoyed watching football and baseball games on tv, listening to sports on the radio, and driving his silver Grand Marquis to his favorite stores and eateries. Our father was very opinionated and animated so one always knew what he was thinking. George is survived by his daughters, Rosalind Clark (Henry, Jr.), Jocelyn Alexander (James), two grandsons, Henry Douglas Clark III, and George Fleming Clark, Sr. (Kiana), two great-grandsons, George Clark, Jr. and Jaiden Clark, two brothers, Garland Tompkins and Langston Tompkins (Jeanette) both of Petersburg, Virginia, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. A third brother, Joseph Tompkins, preceded him in death. On Sunday, February 4th, at 12:35 pm, George Clarence "Zip" Fleming was called home. His body has been made whole again, and we give thanks and praise to our Lord and Savior for the eternal peace and eternal life he now enjoys.
