Frances "Fran" Johnetta Thomas Moreland
June 7, 1948 - December 13, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Frances Thomas Moreland, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, niece, aunt, cousin, and friend, who passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024.
Born on June 7, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio to Bernice Hilliard Thomas and Mitchell Thomas, Fran was the eldest of four and enjoyed music, playing cards, and spending time with her family and friends. She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age.
Fran graduated from John Hay High School in 1966 where she learned a passion for numbers. Fran understood the value of hard work and the dollar, and built her career in the banking industry. She worked 40 plus years growing alongside several mergers with Cleveland Trust, Ameritrust, Star Bank, Society Bank, and Key Bank.
Fran had a passion for her community. She worked tirelessly to own her own home and invest in the community she was raised in. She rooted for her home teams, kept tabs on local politics, and always supported women and minorities on the ballot, emphasizing the importance of voting.
Fran is survived by her fraternal twin sons, Walter T. Moreland and Kevin M. Moreland (Megan), her siblings Mitchell Thomas (Mary), Alvera Thomas, and Mary "May" Thomas-Baker (Harry), her grandchildren Thomas M. Moreland and Quincy G. Moreland, and her aunt Tonina Hilliard Walker (James - deceased). She also leaves behind her nieces Rochelle Moreland Johnson (Avery), Candice Washington, and Taria Cooper (Elton), as well as her nephews Anthony Morris (Yvonne), David Thomas, and Damon Thomas (Alex). Additionally, she is survived by many beloved cousins, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Fran was preceded in death by her parents and many cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Special thanks are extended to Mentor Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center for taking special care of our mother in her last few months.
We invite everyone to wear a dash of green in honor of Fran's favorite color, which symbolizes: a loyal, loving, outgoing, and traditional Black woman.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland in memory of Frances T. Moreland.
