On Thursday evening, February 7th, 2019, after a short illness, God's angel guided Eugene Carl Hughey to his heavenly home. Eugene was born on June 4th, 1947 in Greenwood, South Carolina to the late Anna Wardlaw Jones and Otto Hughey. Gene, as he was affectionately known, was educated in the Cleveland School System. He ran track and won numerous awards prior to graduating from Glenville High School. Gene was baptized at an early age at Emanuel Baptist Church and continued serving the Lord at St Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Harold Luter, where he sang in the choir and served as an ordained deacon. He more recently joined Calvary Hill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor John Ribbins. Gene was a top salesman for Western Auto for many years before completing an apprenticeship and becoming a machinist by trade for more than 40 years at Motch & Merryweather Machinery Co., and most recently PMC Industries, before retiring at age 71. He enjoyed attending church, bowling, roller coasters and playing cards with family and friends. Gene was a diehard Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeye fan. Gene never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him. Gene leaves to cherish fond memories, his wife, Linda, of 28 years, children, Eugene (Crystal) Hughey, Eric (Traci) Hughey, Kimberly Hughey, Antione Hughey, Erika Hughey, Tiffany (Wayne) Fidler from former spouse Patricia Gregory, and Frank Lewis. Four grandchildren, Justin (Rachel) Hughey, Xerina Hughey, Tyrese Hughey, and Emmanuel Lewis; one brother Sammie Charles Cooper of Greenwood, South Carolina, one sister Daisy Douglas of Cleveland, Ohio; two aunts, Laura Griffin of Cleveland, Ohio and Mary House of Nashville, Tennessee; also, two sisters-in-law Dorothy Longshaw, and Sharlene (Sherman) Dean, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, other relatives and friends.
