Ernest O'neil "Ernie" McLendon, Jr was born in Jasper County, Georgia on January 16, 1938 to Ernest O'neil McLendon, Sr and Gertrude (nee Pryor). He was the oldest of four children: brothers John Carlton "Carl" and Lamarr, and sister Jacquelyn Yvonne.
He grew up on Cleveland, Ohio's east side from about age 3, where he attended Cleveland Public Schools, graduating from East Tech High School in 1955. In 1963, he married Vivian (nee Washington) and together they raised three children: Kim Renee, Ernest O'neil III and William Lloyd.
After High School, he began working as an administrative assistant in University Hospital's Pathology Department and rose in the ranks to become Director of Facilities of Case Western Reserve Medical School. He retired in 2006 after 50 years of dedicated service. In his youth, he played basketball and football and in his mature years, he played golf. He enjoyed participating in the university's annual golf outings and proudly displayed his trophies. He also loved fishing, which began with his father and brother Carl and continued with his brother-in-law, Clarence and friends which included sharing this experience with his grandsons. He enjoyed traveling to various cities to visit family during the Family Reunions, listening to his Doo Wop music when driving to their destinations. His indoor hobby was jigsaw puzzling, which he continued until his illness. He passed peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of April 20th.
Preceding Ernie in death were his parents, Ernest and Gertrude, his son Ernest III and his brother Carl.
Ernie had a giving heart and helped others as often as he could. He will be greatly missed. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Vivian of 58 years; his children, Kim Shores and William McLendon; his sister, Dr. Jacquelyn McLendon and brother Lamarr McLendon; his grandchildren, Will Jr., Erika, DeAnthony, Ryan and Devan; his great-grandchildren, Angel and Christian; his sisters-in-law Edith Ware and Alberta (Clarence) Miles, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
