Elizabeth P. Weatherly

November 13, 1923 — September 9, 2015

ELIZABETH P. WEATHERLY, 91 YRS;(Deaconess) was born November 13, 1923 the only child of Lucinda and Willie Pritchett of Birmingham, Alabama. Elizabeth graduated from Parker High School in 1942. She was a member of Bryant Chapel AME Church and attended Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University. Elizabeth joined the nursing program at John Memorial Hospital and in her senior year she joined the nursing corps and trained at various hospitals. Later during the war she met and married Daniel Buford, the father of her daughter Antres V. Buford. Elizabeth worked in New York City at Brooklyn Hospital. After the war she came to Cleveland, Ohio to live near her parents. Elizabeth Weatherly became the first black nurse to be hired at Cleveland Clinic Surgery Department in 1949. Elizabeth remarried at that time and both Buford and Weatherly are now deceased. Elizabeth had to go back to Birmingham, Alabama to take care of her grandmother. While there, she took up Cosmetology and started her own shop. After the passing of her grandmother, Elizabeth went back to Cleveland, Ohio where she joined her mother in the Wedge Restaurant on the corner of 111th Street and Superior Ave. They worked there together until her mother retired and later became ill. While running The Wedge Restaurant, Elizabeth Weatherly belonged to the National Black Business League, NAACP, and Superior Community League and Beth El AME Zion Church. After the passing of her mother, Elizabeth Weatherly worked for the Community Assessment Foundation as head of the kitchen for five years until she retired. Elizabeth leaves to cherish her memories, a devoted daughter, Antres V. Buford of West Hartford, Ct. and a god daughter, Ziola Diaz of Windham, Ct. SERVICES ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th; WAKE 10 AM, FUNERAL 10:30 AM at Watson's Funeral Home, 10913 Superior Ave. Public viewing Tuesday 9 AM - 7 PM. Interment in Lake View Cemetery.
