Elextra Mae Smith

August 29, 1933 — April 2, 2023

On August 29th, 1933, in Birmingham, AL, God blessed the lives of Annie Mae Corley-Walker and Andrew Walker with the birth of their first and oldest daughter out of 4 children, Elextra Mae Walker-Smith. Both parents preceded her in death. She has two sisters Patricia and Cynthia Rowser and one brother Andrew Walker (deceased).

Affectionately known as "Bunchie", this was a nickname her son came up with that she loved because it was very unique and defined the person that she was.

Elextra was baptized at an early age at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church in Birmingham Alabama. Bunchie graduated from Immaculate Catholic School in Birmingham. She married Charlie Smith who proceeded her in death. Bunchie then moved to Cleveland, Ohio in the 1950s and met Billy Rae Nelson who also proceeded her in death. From this union, they had a son Angelo R. Smith who was her pride and joy.

Bunchie worked for the Cleveland Board of Education as a Bus Monitor and a school Lunch Aide for several years. Bunchie loved her flowers and painting. Back home during her younger years, in the warm weather, the front porch was the place to be. It's no surprise that she knew everyone who walked by. Being able to socialize and meet new people was her favorite thing to do. Bunchie used to love dancing and good music was an important part of her life as well. She loved playing basketball with the neighborhood kids She was loved by everyone that she came in contact with. She was very outgoing and did hesitate to speak out when it came to what she believed in. She took no mess from anyone.

Elextra used to love going to shows, the movies, and clothes shopping, before her illness. Angelo, her only son, whom she affectionately called "Angie" used to cook her anything she wanted and she loved everything he made. She used to love making lemon pies and banana pies. When Bunchie became ill in 2004, from cancer and then dementia, Angelo was there for his mom. He took her to doctor appointments and helped with activities of daily living. Those of you that knew Bunchie knew that she could be quite a handful but her son was there by her side. He took very good care of her and would not let anyone take advantage of her with the help of his loving companion Diane Murphy. Bunchie truly loved her son and taught him to be the caring and hardworking man that he is today. She will be deeply missed by everyone, especially Angelo.

Bunchie leaves to cherish her loving memory; her son Angelo (Diane); sisters Patricia and Cynthia Rowser; two grandchildren Griffin R. Thomas and Darius McLeod; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Zhair, and Goddess; along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
