Dorothy Louise Longshaw was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 10th, 1947 to Harold and Naomi Ruth Luter. She was the first of three daughters and born on her dads' birthday. Due to her fathers' job relocation with Chrysler, the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1958 where they joined The Greater Friendship Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor C.T. Nelson. Dorothy graduated from Glenville High School, class of 1965 and went on to attend Cleveland State University.
In her early twenties she was married and very shortly after, widowed. Years later she met and married Carl Longshaw and to that union her two amazing daughters were born, Colleen Annette, and Candace Andrea. She was employed at East Ohio Gas Company for 30 years where she worked in Human Resources. When Dominion bought out East Ohio Gas, she went on to work for Hospice of the Western Reserve, as the Human Resources Manager. She held this position till she retired in January of 2021.
In the summer of 1969 her parents, Harold and Naomi Ruth Luter became the spiritual leaders of The St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church where the family faithfully served till the passing of her parents in 2009. While there, Dorothy was a member of the Host and Hostess's, the Naomi Circle, the choir and ultimately served as an Associate Minister and was ordained in 2004 by her father. She joined Calvary Hill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of John Ribbins in 2018.
Dorothy was an exceptional mother. "We'll figure it out together" were her constant and consistent words of encouragement. Dorothy loved her grandkids. Her daughter Candace made her a grandmother, and it was her favorite title. If Brandon or Bryce did something she was there to see them, do it. In the stands at every game and in the audience to celebrate every academic success. She loved playing cards with her sisters and brother in-laws, bowling, crossword puzzles and family gatherings. Her smile was infectious and her laugh, contagious. She never missed an opening night of her daughter Colleen's shows and if she liked it, would attend multiple times. She was a loving Aunt to Sherman, Frank and Simone and loved Emmanuel, her son in love, as her own.
She was a Christian woman who was called to witness for our Lord, to testify of His goodness and mercy, and to be a living, breathing example of love, strength, grace, and anointing. Her sisters call her amazing, her children call her blessed, she was an anchor for her family and a loyal and faithful friend. She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life her children Colleen Jackson (Emmanuel) and Candace Grant, her sisters Sharlene Dean (Sherman) and Linda Hughey, her grandchildren, Brandon Grant Jr. and Bryce Grant, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and other relatives and friends.
