Dora Lula Hawkins was born October 9, 1930 to Sylvester and Aline Robinson at City Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the eldest of five children. Dora accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Personal Savior at a young age. Dora received her formal education in the Cleveland City School System and was a graduate of John Hay High School. On June 7, 1952, she joined in holy matrimony to Percy Vernon Hawkins. They met when they were 16 years old and were high school sweethearts. They were married for 57 years and had 2 daughters Cynthia and Verneda. Dora worked as a bookkeeper at Quality Furniture Store, then as a nurse's assistant at Saint Luke's Hospital. She was a self taught seamstress who made her own patterns and enjoyed making her own clothes, and many other household items such as curtains, chair covers, pillows, and children's clothing. Dora found pleasure in reading newspapers, magazines, and novels. She was a happy homemaker who enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She loved to create dishes in the kitchen, she was a gourmet cook known for preparing family feasts on special occasions. Dora was especially known for her delicious cheesecake with cherry toppings. She loved to travel with her husband and family. She has traveled throughout the United States. Also, Dora has been to Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela. She has taken cruises through the Panama Canal, and to the Eastern and Western Caribbean Islands. She has traveled on a European Cruise to Stockholm, Sweden; London, England; Paris, France; Spain; Portugal; North Africa; Rome, Italy. Las Vegas was her favorite place and she would go with her husband several times a year. Dora was a woman of virtue. She instilled Christian values and beliefs in her children and grandchildren. She taught them to persevere through life's adversities by having a strong faith in God and an in-depth knowledge of their own heritage. Dora encouraged her family to be lifelong learners. She found fulfillment in supporting their goals with her unconditional love in all areas of their lives. On November 10, 2009, Dora departed this life and entered eternal peace with no more pain or suffering. She leaves to cherish her memories, a loving husband, Percy Vernon; her two daughters, Cynthia M. Stallworth, and Dr. Verneda Butler; three grandchildren, Nicole, Dorian, and Everett; two brothers, Sylvester Jr. and Harold (Mattie); two sisters, who preceded her in death, Catherine and Juanita; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
