Interment in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery for Veteran in Rittman, Ohio on Monday, December 5, 2011 at 10:00 AM. Dewey Edward Springer Jr. was born October 27, 1925 in Birmingham, Alabama to Dewey Edward Springer Sr. and Jessie Harris. He was the third child of four children, the only son, and affectionately referred to as "Bro" by his sisters. He served as a Marine in World War II from 1943-1946. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he was employed by Republic Steel (LTV Steel) as a certified welder for 44 years until his retirement in 1993. Upon retirement, he and his wife of over 30 years, Mattie (nee Mitchell), spent much of their time traveling and entertaining. They were also hosts to many holiday parties and celebrations at their home. Dewey was an avid fisherman, a barbecue grill master, and lover of history, the nature channel, and jazz and R & B music. His family and friends will remember him as a man with many stories and anecdotes and as a loving father, a man of substance, and a person with an insanely funny sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his parents; two of his sisters, Nina Abercrombie and Mildred Fox, and his son, Michael Springer. Dewey leaves to mourn his death his loving and devoted wife, Mattie; his children, Carl Springer (Heather), Ricardo Springer (Lorraine), Valerie Price (Vince), Sonia Springer (Jewel), Nataia Ratliffe, and Jeffrey Springer; his sister, Terri Walker; his stepchildren, Marcia, Theresa, and Vanessa; his grandchildren, Michael, Tirza, Willie, Zach, Jamie, Alan, Desmon, Andrea, Ghana, Kenneth, Tylan, Tremain, and Minaia, and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
