Bertha L. (McEwen) Wesley was born on April 15, 1922, in Magnolia, Mississippi, to Reverend Leroy and Maude (Brumfield) McEwen. Bertha was one of fifteen siblings.

At an early age Bertha’s parents instilled strong values of education into her and her siblings. Bertha attended Pike County Schools. After graduating high school, she continued her education at Jackson State College where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education in 1946.

After graduating from college, Bertha met Howard Wesley in Mississippi and they entered into holy matrimony in 1952. Soon after the couple married, they moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where Bertha began teaching at Paul Revere Elementary School. Bertha was a devoted educator for more than 40 years. In
1955 Bertha and Howard Wesley were blessed with their only child Howard Maurice Wesley.

While living in Cleveland, Bertha was a faithful member of East Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She served the congregation as Superintendent of the Primary Sunday School department, Director of Vocational Bible School, Member Group 14, and on the Courtesy Committee. Bertha loved the Lord and East Mt. Zion and was recognized as a member for more than 50 years. In addition to being active in church, she was also
active in other organizations such as Bridge Club and she was a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority
Incorporated for over 50 years.
