Bertha A. Washington

March 19, 1918 — June 12, 2015

Born March 19, 1918 in Fulton, Mo. to the union of Claude King and Beulah Curtis (Tutt) Deceased 1980. She was the only child. Bertha started elementary school at the age of 5 in Fulton, Mo. Her parents then later moved to Kansas City, Mo. to pursue better lives. They later moved to Columbia, Mo. in her high school years. This is where she finished her education, met and married Booker T. Washington who preceded her in death in 1966. They moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1941 in order to be closer to her mother who had moved there sooner. Through this union they had 6 children: 4 born in Columbia, Mo and 2 in Cleveland, Oh. All who preceded her in death. Bobby L. Washington ( 1995) Diana; Edward Washington (1975); Booker T. Washington Jr. (1991) Margaret; Lovetta M. Chisholm (1986) Benny (deceased); Carl Washington Sr. (2009) Rose; Earl J. Washington Sr. (2003) Juanita. Bertha found and accepted Christ very early in life. Upon her arrival in Cleveland she became a member of Sardis Baptist Church. Where she served as a choir member, nurse and mission leader. In the 80's she left Sardis and became a member of Community Christian Baptist Church where she served as Gospel Choir member, secretary of the choir and hospitality ministry. She Loved her church very much. She worked as a nurse at The Cleveland State Hospital for 16 years. After that, she worked at the VA hospital for 12 years. She was very passionate about nursing and her patients. She retired from VA hospital in 1985 and began volunteer work at Huron Road Hospital in it's gift shop until 2006. Bertha enjoyed life to the fullest. She traveled to various places around the world. She enjoyed going to new places in the U.S. and bringing back souvenirs. She really enjoyed taking cruises. The only cruise she talked about that she didn't get an opportunity to experience was an Alaskan cruise. Nothing gave her more joy than seeing her family and knowing they were alright. Although known to most people as Mrs. Washington. Those who knew and loved her called her "Granny". She leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter in-laws, Diana Washington- Tampa Fl., Margaret Washington- Warrensville Heights, Oh., Rose Washington-Cleveland, Oh. Juanita Washington- Cleveland, Oh., grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives. One of her famous sayings was " I don't want to be a burden to anyone" and she never was. She was a joy to be around. We will cherish every moment Granny. SERVICES Saturday, JUNE 20th at 10:00 AM at Community Christian Church, 1501 Dille Rd. Public viewing Friday 9 AM to 7 PM at Watson's Funeral Home, 10913 Superior Ave.
