Annie Kate Powell

March 26, 1924 — April 3, 2014

Mrs. Annie Kate McCalebb Powell was born on March 26, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Clinton McCalebb and Estelle Flagg. The Heavenly Father called her home to rest on April 3, 2014. On September 4, 1941, Annie Kate McCalebb married the late Marcus Garvey Powell, Sr. They had two sons, Marcus Garvey Powell II and Cedric Merlin Powell. Together they celebrated sixty-three years of marriage. Annie attended Central High School, and was a dedicated and committed employee of the Cleveland Public School system where she worked as a cafeteria aide for nearly twenty years. Countless students remember her warm demeanor, words of encouragement, and faithful service. Many students referred to her as mom. She was an excellent cook, and many family members and friends called on her for her famous recipes. She was an Eastern Star Matron. Annie led a life enriched by many positive experiences. Annie professed her faith in Christ at an early age. A dedicated member of the First Zion Missionary Baptist Church for more than fifty years, Annie served on the Usher Board, the Mothers Board, Nurses Guild, and other committees in the church. Annie leaves to cherish her memory: Two sons, Marcus Garvey Powell II (Anita) of Cleveland, OH, and Professor Cedric Merlin Powell of Louisville, KY; a daughter-in-law, Dr. Annette Harris Powell of Louisville, KY; a sister-in-law, Miriam Walker of Cleveland, Ohio; one niece, Hattie McCalebb of Detroit, MI; a nephew, Willie Clinton McCalebb of Detroit, MI; six grandchildren, Marc Anthony Lewis, Cameron Powell, Marcus Garvey Powell III, Tiffany Powell, Coleman Harris Powell, and Ella Catherine Harris Powell; two great grandchildren, Marcus Garvey Powell IV and Assata Powell; cousins, Mary Helen Martin and Terri Diane Herron; two church daughters, Kathleen Dunn and Sarah Anderson; a host of great nieces, great nephews, and other relatives; her First Zion Church family; and many dear and treasured friends. Annie was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack McCalebb and William McCalebb, and a nephew John McCalebb. Annie Kate McCalebb Powell will be truly missed. She was a devoted and loving wife, a proud and committed mother, an adoring grandmother, a loyal friend, and a valued member of her church and community. She remains forever in our hearts.
